 Justification

 Socio-cultural

·         A people group that can read and write in their own language strengthens their society as a whole.  They are better able to take care of themselves, and able to contribute to the wider community.  A disadvantaged people bring shame on a society, and can lead to political instability. Within a people group it is important that literacy be made available to all equally. This enhances social cohesion, leading to a happier and more stable people.

  • When a minority language is given the dignity of writing, it is no longer an orphan amongst larger, written languages. While those other languages may justifiably have more status or political sway, a smaller written language is at least given a status, a valid place in the wider scheme of communication.

Educational

  • The perceptual-cognitive process of reading is learnt just once in a lifetime.
  • Having grasped the symbols and strategies of reading their language, readers can then go on to develop a broad understanding of life and the world. By thus engaging in the interchange of thought, readers may grow in areas of knowledge and expertise, benefiting all those around, including their society as a whole.
  • The primary purpose of language is the communication of meaning.  (Written language releases this communication from its temporal state, and increases its depth.)
  • Thus, when a child or adult learns to read in a language they do not know, an inherent contradiction exists in the process. The symbols are converted to oral/aural symbols, but the meaning is lacking, or only partial.

·         This leads to a detachment from the meaning of the text, and thus arises a hindrance to the development one’s thought processes. Rote learning then tends to become the preferred method of education, especially in the early years. Eventually one becomes accustomed to not understanding properly what one reads. Higher learning and literacy skills are then out of reach for all but the brightest of students. The inaccuracy of thought is further intensified as the student has not been able to spend the usual, fuller amount of time mastering and developing skills in their own written language first.

First language literacy is essential for:

  • Accurate mastery of the reading process
  • Proper development of the thought processes necessary for education
  • Solid competence in one’s own language
  • Affirmation (or status) of the language and cultural identity of a people
  • Continuity between generations, of relationships, knowledge of customs, and social cohesion.

Philosophical

·         Vernacular literacy is the gateway to true dignity for a people. It opens the way for educated concourse with the world at large.

  • When a people’s language remains oral, even the noblest of thoughts are vulnerable to the whims of time and circumstance. They may be scattered as so many leaves upon an autumn wind, or leave only vague traces in the sands of history, when swamped by invading tides of thought.
  • The language of one’s mother is the language of the heart. To give words the wings of writing is to give the heart wings. To give the heart wings is to open the springs of life.

 Goals:

1. To enable the Kalasha to have a written language.
